At MorningStar we believe that the Bible teaches that baptism is the outward testimony of an inward transformation. Baptism is the 1st step of obedience after making a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. By being baptized you are making a statement that you have trusted Jesus Christ as your personal savior and that you want to communicate to those around you that you made this commitment.
Baptism is a symbol
When a follower of Jesus Christ is baptized it gives us a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- It symbolizes the death of Christ – when we are immersed in the waters of baptism it symbolizes Jesus death on the cross for our sins. It also represents our identification with his death for the forgiveness of our sins. (Romans 6:3-4, Colossians 2:12)
- It symbolizes new life in Jesus – when we come up out of the waters of baptism we are symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to newness of life. We are proclaiming that through His salvation we are raised with Him to new life. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Much like a wedding ring symbolizes a commitment between a husband and a wife, baptism makes a visual statement that says, “I’m following Jesus Christ and I want everyone to know it.”
